In the last few seasons that FARAH ANGSANA has been showing at NYFW, she has evolved into an eveningwear designer to be reckoned with.

I’ve been following Farah since the days when she and Kevan Hall were the star attractions at MBFW [Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week] LA. With the right Public Relations Firm, Paul Wilmot, at her side, Farah’s realizing her potential. Now that she’s got the right representation behind her, she continues to hone her craft while staying true to her signature look, which she told me post-show
is also her mantra, ” sexy, elegant, NEVER vulgar”.

Like nearly every designer out there, she’s got an eye on producing some Red Carpet looks, but she’s also got some great day looks for the soigné woman who as Tom Ford pointed-out, is willing to put time and energy into looking great.

Farah had lots of cocktail looks to choose from. There was a gorgeous pink and green chiffon print that’s stunning, in both the long and short versions. The Red carpet bid came when she showed the gold lame Oscar statuette gown.
My favorite though, was the finale mini dress I’d like to see the likes of Natalie Portman or Carrie Mulligan in. The green draped silk chiffon Kebaya mini dress embroidered with gold thread and Swarovski crystals was a feat of craftsmanship, and earned her a well-deserved round of applause.

I then shifted gears from an evening wear mind set to day wear, and went a few miles South, down to Pier 59, to go see what one of my favorite daywear and swim designers, MARA HOFFMAN, had in store for s/s2011. While Farah clearly designs with the Red Carpet in mind, Mara Hoffman’s demographic is something entirely different. You see a diversity of stars as different as Jennifer Lopez
and Lauren Conrad,
rocking their respective Mara Hoffmans, but even more importantly, you see a lot of non-celebs wearing it too.
The true barometer of a brand’s success is if the question, “are people (other than the models, celebrities and public relations team) wearing it?” Looking around the crowded presentation space, I glimpsed over a dozen cool women, some tall, some short, wearing Mara Hoffman. They weren’t celebrities who were paid to attend and to wear Mara Hoffman. They were real women wearing these clothes because they love how they look in them.

Upon entering the Pier 59 space, we were treated to vacation-themed vignettes
complete with calypso music, palm trees and Mara’s bright batik prints. It’s tricky to design a good print, and Mara’s one of the best when it comes to creating a winning print. As ‘Ari’ of Entourage is won’t to say, “it’s all good”.
I fixated on the stunning red batik print.
Wanna wanna! I left, mentally planning-out how I’d coordinate that piece with other items in my wardrobe for my spring break trip to the Mexican Riviera post the fall 2011 NY shows.

The after-show chatter about Mara Hoffman’s show was that it was “like an acid trip, but a good one”. Having never dropped acid, I really can’t weight-in on that. What I can say is that this is a designer who just gets stronger each and every season.
This season, Ms. Hoffman’s muse went on a mystical journey through the jungle. There were a variety of new silhouettes and several new eye-catching and ethnic inspired, bold and colorful prints. There were of course the beautiful batik prints that Mara’s known for. An interesting twist was Hoffman’s partnering with Alternative Apparel, who are known for their vintage soft tees and basics, for a special mini-collaboration for the show.

The soft baseball tee I went home with is the perfect fusion of all-American tee and the funky, arty vibe Mara’s known for. I’ve gotten more than a few compliments on my unicorn baseball tee, from a few of the girls at Miami International TSA, no less.
Going back to the show, aside from the spectacular color combinations, I wish I had the long hair to be able to replicate the messy braid created by the TRESSemme team.

>MARA HOFFMAN – Preview of the Swim 2011 Collection

16 Jul

TEXT,VIVIAN KELLY

Every season at whichever fashion week I’m attending, there are the obvious stars of the week. This week, at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, the two highlights are Trina Turk and Mara Hoffman.
New York City based Ready-to-Wear & Swimwear designer Mara Hoffman will be showing her “Mara Hoffman Swim” collection on the runway for the second time during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim shows on Saturday, July 17, at 7p.m. on the Raleigh’s Cabana Grande.

This season, Hoffman’s muse goes on a mystical journey through the jungle. Expect to see variety of new silhouettes and several new eye-catching and ethnic inspired, bold and colorful prints. This year, Hoffman partnered with Alternative Apparel, known for their vintage soft tees and basics, for a special mini-collaboration for the show.

After flipping through the list of shows on the roster, this one’s at the top of my go-to list. Watch for the post-show review this weekend!

As I was starting to get myself together for Miami Swim, People’s Revolution PR sent-over some images of Mara Hoffman’s adorable Resort collection. I love resort because it’s a capsule collection [in most cases] and the designer is less likely to lose their focus and go off on silly tangents. What you get are collections that are sweet and easy to wear to picnics and at the beach – like Cynthia Rowley’s resort collection and this collection by Mara Hoffman.
Money’s tight these days and Mara made a wise decision to show both resort and Swim at Mercedes Benz Miami Swim. This is a step that would make a lot of sense for more designers to take. If they did, I’m quite sure that more editors and buyers would attend the Miami Shows. While it’s good to bring in the local socials who buy the suits, it would drive business to get more press and buyers in the seats. To take it one step further, if the shows were relocated to Palm Beach, it’s likely that the New York socialites who own a home there would make a special trip to attend. Were that to happen, sales would very likely increase.
Maybe that will never happen, but in the meantime, I’m looking forward to viewing Mara’s hand-dyed silhouettes and gorgeous original silk prints, inspired by her travels around the world.

MY teenage daughter and her friends are fans – of Katy Perry. I am a long-standing MARA HOFFMAN fan. This weekend, a rare thing has just happened: we all agree on something! That “something” would be that Katy Perry looks fantastic in Mara Hoffman’s Spring 2010 Net Back Cowl dress in guatemala violet print. I’ve always loved Mara’s funky cool-girl vibe and it was good to see it on someone who could pull it off.
Have a look at these pics of Katy shot Friday night, May 7th, of Katy leaving Trousdale night club with Russell Brand in West Hollywood.

Mara Hoffman’s a designer who’s been on the outer edges of many people’s radar screens, but who deserves more attention.

She’s a New York City based fashion designer, who graduated from Parsons School of Design and also studied at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London. She launched her ready-to-wear collection in 2000. The line evolved from hand-dyed silhouettes to her current collection, which concentrates heavily on original silk prints and encompasses everything from dresses, leggings and blouses to coats, knit sweaters and scarves. Hoffman continuously draws inspiration from nature and fantasy, often finding creativity from her own travels around the world.

Her big break came when Sex and the City stylist Patricia Field stopped her on the street of New York City to complement her outfit. Field picked up Hoffman’s samples and sold them in her shop, House of Field. Hoffman’s colorful designs are a fave with celebrities such as; Katy Perry, Halle Berry, Megan Fox, Jennifer Lopez, Drew Barrymore, Lauren Conrad, Eva Longoria Parker, Whitney Port and Ginnifer Goodwin. Mara Hoffman is currently available through top retailers worldwide.

>Mara Hoffman’s Groovy fall 2010 Collection

WHEN + WHERE: New York Fashion Week, at Open
House Gallery (201 Mulberry Street between Kenmare and Spring).

Welcome back to the late sixties and early seventies a la Marianne
Faithfull. We love Mara’s fabric selection of washed silks, printed chiffons,
and velvet chiffon burnout. There were interesting silhouettes, abstract prints, and detailed designs with a span of
dark and soft colors, and bold prints in darker tones lightened-up with pops of red, green, blue and purple.

Ms. Hoffman’s artsy way of presenting included showing an original film, a collage-like dream setting following witches as they fall into “Hysterical Levitation”, starring Isabelle McNally and styled by Masha Orlov, which reminded us of one of our favorite shows, the sixties’ classic, “Dark Shadows”.

While enjoying the music and the clothes, we wondered if this was a tribute to the old hippies as they sprayed the very young models’ hair white, but only in the root area.

The music by LIVING SACRIFICE also went a long way towards setting the tone-groovy and cool, dudes!
