>GRACE JONES AT THE HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM

6 Aug

>

Text, Vivian G. Kelly

TIME & PLACE: Thursday night, July 30th
@ the Hammerstein Ballroom, 311 West 34th Street, NYC

It’s music, it’s pop, it’s fashion, no…it’s ART – It’s the one and only inimitable Grace Jones.

We were thrilled to be attending the Grace concert, which was woefully underpublicized [shame on you agents and promoters for missing out on this platinum opportunity!] With icons dying off right and left [and in the proverbial threes]
– Michael, Farrah. Billy [Mayes] we want to catch them all before it’s too late.

SHOW DAY
Stars aren’t really expected to be on time [one of the perks of stardom]. The doors opened at 6:30p.m., and thanks to an attendee who had friends in the band, we found out that Grace wouldn’t be going on before 9p.m.

SHOWTIME!
We were squarely in the middle of the standing floor seating, squashed between a drag Grace wanna-be and boys born way after 1981 when Grace ruled the music scene in downtown NY who had recently discovered her. WE were in the same boat, unlike many of our friends; we had NOT seen her at the Palladium in the eighties in the early years.

FASHION FANTASY –She emerged on stage, singing, “This is Life”, in a black and white shroud – impossible to see the face or body – yet. She’s a rock/pop star, and like a Queen, she accepted the crowd’s screams of adoration – no smile. We had the first of many fashion moments that evening, admiring the handiwork of costume designer Eiko Ishioka’s handiwork. The Japanese costume designer’s credits include Oscar-winning costume designer, known for her work in stage, screen, advertising, and print media. She won a 1992 Academy Award for costume design for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and costumes for Cirque de Soleil.

FUN FACT
Total number of costume changes in 1 ½ hours [no break!] ELEVEN, each more fantastic than the one before.

OF SPECIAL NOTE
Grace is a woman who loves her milliner; that is she loves a good hat and knows HOW to wear them. There was a white patent gladiator helmet, a silver bowler hat, and a hat that looked vaguely Viking-like.

ROCKING THE BODY
You all want to know and that was the first question out of our friends’ mouths – “was she in shape?”
The answer, “yes!”. She looked as if she’d stepped out of a time capsule with her face and body intact, looking pretty much as she did in her eighties hey day.
The reality is that she’s known for taking extraordinarily good care of herself – no drinking, no smoking, etc. Add to that some dieting and maybe even a trip to the plastic surgeon. Even if that’s true, who cares? She’s set up a challenge for Madonna now, who looks wonderful at 50. Grace is 11 years older and still hot.

EIGHTIES FUN
Although the stage wasn’t huge, Grace packed in all the fun extras we loved back in the day. There was the wind fan, the laser lights, and the video screen showing MTV/VH-1 clips in the background.

BEST MOMENT – when Grace partnered up for some ballroom dancing with a tuxedo clad dummy and foxtrotted to “La Vie En Rose”. In between cracking jokes, such as “I’m 5,000 years old!” she also told the crowd that Director Roman Polanski asked her to use the song for his film.
If you didn’t make the New York on LA shows, you may have to content yourself with tracks on your ipod, it’s unlikely she’ll be performing again soon.

WHEN & WHERE: Wednesday Night, July 23rd, @ 8:30p.m.

Sitting in Section 105H we had a bird’s eye view of the stage and could have jumped down and fallen into the arms of the blue shirted security guards.
The mood in the venue was mellow yet happy and anticipatory as we waited for the Diva to come on.
Unlike the Justin [Timberlake] concert that was 98% women and 2% men, the ratio was 60/40 here. Many of the men attended with their S.O.

FASHION, FASHION, FASHION!
TOTAL NUMBER OF OUTFIT CHANGES: 11

Beyonce uses French fashion designer THIERRY MUGLER, to create the fantasy get-ups she wears on stage. True to form, she made her entrance in a gold lame body suit , complete with a giant gold tail-bow, 20 Carat diamond earrings, and 5” gold heels. Put that with her huge hair, and she was every inch the”SASHA FIERCE” character she morphs into once on stage. Being a glam diva is a tough climb and once there, it’s even harder to stay on top with all the younger performers breathing over your shoulder and waiting in the wings.

BEST OUTFIT
The SASHA FIERCE outfit – think a cross between Wonder Woman and a leopard.
Her backup dancers wore rubber skin patent leather suits that showed every one of their muscle striations and more than thrilled the male contingent in the audience.

NOT JUST [any old] DIVA
The concert spanned a wide range of songs and reminded us of the impressive body of work she’s accumulated since she broke away from Destiny’s Child and went on her own. There were numbers from the platinum “DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE” 2006 album which caused a sustained deafening roar from the audience, to some songs from “Dream Girls” to video of her singing at the OBAMA INNAUGURAL. Knowles reminded us of pop legend TINA TURNER, at a long-ago “WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT” concert we attended I 1985 in Charlotte, NC, just after her huge career comeback. The strut, the legs, the bigger than big hair, the voice that bounces effortlessly from octave to octave – check.
Unlike Tina, Beyonce has youth on her side and effortlessly contorted herself into a human pretzel all the while singing her heart out for her audience.

SHOW HIGHLIGHT
When the lights went up and Beyonce appeared in a gold encrusted bodysuit on a flying trapeze well over 20 feet off the ground.

MOST MOVING MOMENT –
Her tribute to the late Michael Jackson. Hair guru LEONARD ZAGAMI of NYC’s ANTHONY LEONARD had predicted early that day that pop divas would be doing numerous tributes to the late king of pop. Good call, Leonard!
It’s not suprising that Anthony’s on point, he’s the guy who cuts Madonna and countless other celebs’ hair. Life is too short not to have great hair.

LAST WORDS
What really won us over is that you really got the feeling that she was giving her all to the audience, no hold-backs. Also similar was the frequent audience interaction, she leaned over many times to touch her fans’ hands, to their delight and to the consternation of the Arena’s security detail. A guy named Joe Wilson she had a conversation with during the show’s life will never be the same.

>THE MET COSTUME INSTITUTE: The model as Muse – Marc Jacobs’s Magic and Anna’s clout at Work

23 May

There’s always two sides to any story, and not everyone in fashion-land is on board with Anna’s work with the MET and Costume Institute.
Most notably, industry insider, Michael Gross, has penned “Rogues Gallery” an unauthorized history of the MET and some of the key players there. Gross has a rep for delivering a juicy read with a lot of inside dirt, whether it’s one of his magazine articles in New York Magazine, Vanity Fair, or in a book. Part of the criticism is leveled at the flashy MET ball that’s the same evening as the press preview. This season, the Gala Benefit took place on May 4, with Honorary Chair Marc Jacobs and Co-Chairs Kate Moss, Justin Timberlake, and Anna Wintour in charge. Unlike many charitable events, we’ve all heard of at least one member on this committee.
Under Anna’s watch, it’s turned into New York’s hottest annual event and definitely the one that scores the most press clippings. Maybe it’s not very “old money”, but flash has a way of attracting cash, and that’s what the MET and all artistic institutions need to survive.

LIKE IT OR NOT, THE MET COSTUME INSTITUTE HAS “BELONGED” TO VOGUE FOR YEARS. THIS STARTED WHEN DIANA VREELAND [FORMER VOGUE EDITREX] CAME OUT OF RETIREMENT TO WORK ON THIS THEN DUSTY, IGNORED SECTION OF THE MET. SHE WAS ASSISTED BY NONE OTHER THAN THE YOUNG ANDRE LEON TALLEY, WHO WOULD LATER BECOME ONE OF VOGUE’S KEY PLAYER’S UNDER ANNA WINTOUR’S LONG-RUNNING REGIME.

ABOUT THE CURRENT EXHIBIT
TAKE YOUR TIME going through. This is NOT a drive-by, like last year’s “Superheroes”.
Said Harold Koda, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute “The exhibition examines a timeline of fashion from 1947 to 1997 through the idealized aesthetic of the fashion model.” “We look at the power of clothing, fashion photography, and the model to project the look of an era. With a mere gesture, a truly stellar model can sum up the attitude of her time – becoming not only a muse to designers or photographers, but a muse to a generation.”

We arrived 20 minutes prior to the end of the Monday AM press preview but got to stay an hour, thanks to the gracious MET PR team.

HIGHLIGHTS
1. Listening to Anna talk to her guest while standing in front of the original Madame Gres Gown Sunny Harnett wore in a glamorous casino shot.

2. Seeing [and very tempted to touch] YSL’s Mondrian color block dress

3. All of the Twiggy and Veruschka black and whites

OUR FAVORITE IMAGES
1. In the SEVENTIES SECTION – model Lisa Taylor driving her car
2. The image of a young LAUREN HUTTON with nasty remarks written about this beauty’s “imperfections” – goes to prove, NO ONE’S perfect!!

MOST OPULENT EXHIBIT
John Galliano’s couture dresses shown at the House of Dior 40th Anniversary Extravaganza

THE VERDICT
If you’re a fashion history buff, you’ll love it.
If you love fashion, period, you’ll at least like it.

>BEAUTY POWERHOUSE L’OREAL CONTINUES ITS REPRESENTATION OF MULTICULTURAL BEAUTIES.

Freida Pinto AKA “Latika” TAPPED AS L’OREAL PARIS SPOKESPERSON

The gorgeous Pinto is best known for her performance as “Latika” in the Oscar winning film, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE,the film that won eight Oscars. After Julian Schnabel’s movie she’s currently shooting, she will be filming this summer in Woody Allen’s next film.
Says Pinto, “I am very moved to be joining the great L’Oréal Paris family and all these personalities: a family I am now proud to be a part of”.

KUDOS to L’Oreal for continuing to what we’ll call its campaign for racial diversity. Okay, if you’re a cynic [which we admittedly are around 80% of the time] you’d be justified in calling it smart biz-sense. While we love the current Chanel ads for the Lumieres Celestes Collection on a mysterious blonde beauty, we’re equally impressed with L’Oreal’s across-the-board campaign strategy.

HITTING THE STORES
Towards the intent of keeping it “real”, we hit our local Walgreens to see who L’Oreal has pitching various products at this point in time.

THE PLAYERS

DOUTZEN KROES [blonde, blue –eyed Dutch cover girl]

-BEYONCE KNOWLES

-LINDA EVANGELISTA [90’S supermodel – Steven Meisel’s darling]

-PENELOPE CRUZ

-EVA LONGORIA

-ANDIE MACDOWELL [of “Green Card” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral” fame]

ABOUT THE PRODUCTS
At under $10 a pop [and often less thanks to a generous promotions program] L’Oreal makes it easy to experiment without breaking the bank for a costly cosmetics mistake that happens when you’ve picked the wrong shade of $30+ lipstick, used it once, and can’t take it back.
Some of our favorites that earn a space in our [very small] go-everywhere cosmetics bag:
– Bare Naturale gentle lip conditioner in 815 “Soft “Spice” = super-moisturizing, much prettier than Chapstick!
– HIP Bright Shadow Duo in 514 “Reckless”= fun “out there” color
– Crayon Petite Automatic Lip Liner in “Plums Wines” = truly long-lasting, we use it as a base underneath the lip conditioner for our own custom wine-red shade.

Images of Illustrations, courtesy of the Society of Illustrators

TIME & PLACE: Saturday Afternoon, April 4, 2009
The Upper East Side, at The Society Of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street, NYC

FASHION LIGHTENING STRIKES!
We walked in just 20 minutes before the club was going to close. What was on the walls of the ground floor gallery took our breath away, to the point that we signed [and commented] in the guest book – something we’re rarely moved to do. Ours was one of the many raves about this month-long exhibit that ends on Saturday, May 2nd. If there’s any way you can make it into NY, DO IT. If you love fashion and you’re in the area, it’s a MUST SEE.

THE EXHIBIT
The exhibit spans 2 of the Society’s galleries, and was curated by Robert W. Richards.
You’ll find the works of just about every fashion illustrator who’d make the WHO’S WHO list of illustrators if such as list existed. The only notable missing was AAU’s Gladys Perrint Palmer. When we enquired, a staffer told us she was represented in the Permanent Exhibit.

WHO’S ON THE WALLS
Alvaro, Kenneth Paul Block, Antonio Lopez, Bil Donovan, Eric, Joe Eula, JC Leyendecker, Mel Odom, George Stavrinos, Michael Vollbracht, and STEVEN BROADWAY, a Professor at F.I.T. – our new favorite. Bear in mind, that’s’ just a partial listing.

The piece de resistance was on the ground floor, straight in back – a black and white ink drawing of fashion icon, BABE PALEY, by KENNETH PAUL BLOCK, whose long elegant lines and short bouffant hair make her instantly recognizable. Equally wonderful was STEVEN BROADWAY’s image of a model clad in Chanel, Lagerfeld style.
FOR A CAUSE: GMHC
A portion of the proceeds of the sales of the Opening Event on April 3rd go towards The Gay Men’s Health Crisis Art Therapy Programs.
To learn more about the programs, visit www.societyillustrators.org
To inquire about purchasing any of the works in the exhibits, please contact, The Society’s Director, Anelle Miller

Edited by Vivian G. Kelly

On Wednesday, March 18th, I had the opportunity to work on the launch of the Los Angeles store for What Comes Around Goes Around at a really cool venue – Space 15 Twenty. WCAGA is the brainchild of Seth Weisser and Gerard Maione. The space is amazing and serves as an arena for expression with stores that include a cool new Urban Outfitters, a bookstore, a gallery, and more. It is also across the way from Amoeba music. There are certain nights they show films in the courtyard. It is a must see – they have everything you need from cool clothes from emerging designers, vintage clothing, books, films, art, music and even cinnamon popcorn.

Some outstanding fashion people served on the host committee for this event: Erin Wasson, Rose Apodaca, Lawren Howell, Katherine Power, Hillary Kerr, Estee Stanley, Nicole Chavez and Nicole Richie. The crowd was filled with so many stylish people including one of my favorite guys, Arlo Weiner. He’s the most stylish guy around in his cool hat, a bowtie, and vintage monocle. He made my night! Another guy that was part of the event was my friend, Josh, who wore this Princeton jacket – not too many guys can rock something like that but he does. Everything was thought out from the entrance to the space – guests started their night when they received a vintage key on a chain. The bar sponsors served old school cocktails from Rose’s Cocktails Infusions [KARMA, and Boddingtons]. The goodie bag was filled with my favorite new band’s cds – EDWARD SHARPE and the Magnetic Zeros and blue q goodies from “shut the hell up gum” to glow in the dark tattoos. There is a lot of buzz about this event, as you can seem from my photos.

SXSW
I got to travel there with one of my buddies who’s a music buff and turns me on to all my new favorite bands. We got in and checked out the coolest band, Bishop Allen. Their new album is amazing. From there we went to see one of my most favorite new bands EDWARD SHARPE AND THE MAGNETIC ZEROS. Their music makes you want to dance and just throw your hands in the air. I also had the opportunity to see Peter, Bjorn and John. The following day we prepared for our CULTURE JAM & HOUSE OF CASSETTE PARTY. We were very lucky to have a private acoustic performance from THE KIN. A big “thank you” to our awesome sponsors – Amstel Light, Fiji Water, Pop Chips and Mischieve Hornitos and THEME magazine.

That night I met the guys from Crystal Method who are so nice and learned about these cool watches from TOKYO FLASH that are super rad. The next day, I had the opportunity to rock out to THE NEW YORK DOLLS at the Rachael Ray event. And then that night we went to Perez Hilton’s showcase, where the surprises kept coming from Indigo Girls, Rye Rye, a special performance from Kid Cudi to a very big surprise KANYE WEST. It was awesome – he did about six songs. I love ‘FLASHING LIGHTS’ – such a great runway show. I made a few other stops and ended the night with a glorious performance from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Check them out; you will thank me! They are musically stimulating and super fashionable from their clothing to their instruments. The girl that rocks the accordion has the coolest pearlescent find and there is a drum with an Indian Chief – love the sound of the beat.
