The Swim Anywhere Swim Show at the Gansevoort, Miami Beach

3 Aug

Text, Vivian Kelly

The Gansevoort
Miami, FL

The SwimWear Anywhere show was not what I had expected, based on the show I attended last year at the Raleigh Pool. It probably wasn’t what PR Deborah Hughes and her team expected either, thanks to a huge tropical rainstorm that actually flooded a section of the check in tent at the Raleigh. The show was scheduled to take place on the Gansevoort’s rooftop but was relocated to the adjacent ballroom, due to the sheeting rain. The bright side was that the show got a nice size crowd due to the delay and an extended cocktail hour.

Groovy Gadgets- Benny Rosset’s Cia. Maritima Microsoft PC

WHAT & WHERE: The Windows PC Summer Showcase 8:30 -10 – the Raleigh Penthouse

Text, Vivian Kelly

Once upon a time, tech was geeky. No more – hipsters shell out big bucks to have the latest gadget, whether it be a Blackberry, IPad, Iphone, digital camera or a computer. It’s gotten to the point that you are starting to become defined by what tech toys you possess. My computer is like another body part considering how much I use it, so it’s got to be fun and fashionable. Tech, like cars and designer handbags, has become a status symbol.

Like many of you, I constantly change my laptop’s screensaver and will probably order the Twelve South computer case Theadora carries around when she’s reporting in Paris for Euro Cheapo.

While going up to the Penthouse, I thought that Microsoft was going to be showing us screensavers of exotic prints from Cia. Maritima and wondered whey they would do an event for this. Cool screensavers onto themselves are nothing new.  Last year, Microsoft gave us some designer stickers to adorn our laptops and those were fun but stickers start to peel and then you have to deal with getting the sticky residue off.

What was actually on display upstairs was much more exciting: limited edition Cia Maritima laptops!

This latest fashion meets tech collaboration between Microsoft and Cia. Maritima features Benny Rosset’s eye-popping turquoise/blue or purple/pink designs. There’s nothing like a limited edition of – fill in the blank – to get my blood going. Remember the Limited Edition Diane Von Furstenberg phone? It sold out as soon as it became available. I wasn’t quick enough and missed out.

No, we didn’t get a laptop, but Windows gave us a little candy – a wireless Press Lounge in the Raleigh Hotel Lobby, equipped with some PCs to work on in-between shows. I was happy to take advantage of the convenience and to take mini breaks to gaze at black and white photos of my favorite style icons on the lobby’s wall of fame: Kim Novac, Jackie and John Kennedy, Greta Garbo etc etc. Heaven!

Rambo’s Picks-Week July 18-MakeUp ForEver=The Cat’s Meow

Pick of the Week: RAMBO – Beauty Editor at Large

Rambo writes, “Our Editor in Chief, Viv, went to Miami to cover Mercedes Benz Miami Fashion Week Swim for our friends at The Fashion List. She was gone for  48 hours and came home happy and impressed by what she saw AND with 1 extra suitcase [purchased a.m. of departure]. I couldn’t wait to investigate. It was loaded with show paperwork [boring], an In-Styler Rotating Ironthat is truly amazing [more later on this and makeup – lots of it. Mmmmm.”

RAMBO made a beeline for my stash of Make Up For Ever samples the minute I threw them on the home office floor. Maybe he liked the peppy tagline on the packaging, “Created for Pros Perfect for YOU” or the selection: lip gloss, lipsticks, HD blush, primer or makeup remover, and the piece de resistance – #26 EYELASHES/Faux-Cils – ooh la la! Ours are red white and blue perfect for Bastille Day and/or the Fourth of July.

Of all of these he’s finally chosen a favorite: Make Up For Ever LAB SHINE STAR COLLECTION GLOSS IN S-2.

1. My Editor wore it on the plane and it was still on when I welcomed her home with my signature paws up and headbutt.

2. It matches the YSL color our BFF, Theadora Brack, the cool Paris Correspondent for Euro Cheapo gave us. I love when things match – that makes me purr.

3. It’s the purrfect consistency. My whiskers didn’t get gloppy when I touched it. Like those Three Bears say, “It’s Just Right!”

4. When we run out, it’s easy to get – available at Sephora. What mall do you know that doesn’t have a Sephora? It’s one of our fave beauty bazaars. I heard they even allow dogs into the Paris one?!

5. It was free, which means, maybe I’ll get groovy Feline Tree House I’ve been jonesing for in the   Hammacher Schlemmer catalogue I’ve been rolling around on since Christmas! It’s only $799.95!

Mid-Summer Diary – The Mercedes Benz Miami Swim Shows: Miami Madness

20 Jul

Text, Vivian Kelly

On the last leg of my journey to this year’s MB Fashion Week Swim Shows, I had some time to kick back and organize my calendar for the next 3 days in South Beach.

That’s right – this is not a typo –  I needed to seriously organize my calendar. No, it ISN’T NYFW, but poring over my show calendar I found that I was triple booked upon arrival – not including the compulsory dash over to the Raleigh lobby, home of IMG’s Miami Command Center to pick up my badge to be able to gain access to the Raleigh Show venue.

I promptly tweeted this phenomenon out while waiting for my connection to taxi to the runway and get me out of Charlotte, NC and to SOBE.

Accustomed to being a live ping pong ball during NYFW for season after season, I actually considered if I could: hit the Inca/Warren Tricomi Presentation at the W South Beach on 22nd and Collins [4-7p.m.], the Khloe Kardashian/Nivea Tweet Up Event at the Soho Beach House on 43rd and Collins[6:30 sharp tweeting with K.K], and make the 6p.m. Caffe Swimwear Show at the Cabana Grande and the 7p.m. Dolores Cortes/Oasis Show, both at the Raleigh, 17th and Collins.

I forgot to mention that I’m backstage at my favorite show of this Fashion Week, Mara Hoffman, and have an interview scheduled post-show, jammed before the Aqua di Lara/Oasis show, starting at 9, another show also at the Raleigh at 10. It all ends with the Mara Hoffman after-party at the W’s Wet Bar, where I’ll get to have a close look at the limited edition cans Mara designed, and another shot at the interview if it doesn’t happen as scheduled at 8.

If all of the above sounds unrealistic, it turns out that it was.

A few hours later – WHAT Actually Happened:

I missed KK’s Tweet Up, the Caffe Swim Show, and the Inca/Tricomi event, due to renovations going on at the Hotel Shelley, up on 8th and Collins. I’d booked the cute boutique hotel to get some peace and quiet post shows. It was already cutting it close, but  all plans derailed when the Manager sent me in a cab [on them] to another South Beach Hotel Group property.  The result was an upgrade to the 3-star Catalina, directly across the street from the Raleigh.

That got me there in time to get to the Raleigh press credentials office and just make it into my seat at Dolores Cortes for the 7 p.m. show.

7p.m. Dolores Cortes Show was an animal print and feather story.

Yes, I’m referring to those ubiquitous Steven Tyler feathers he wore on American Idol that became the trend of the summer of 2011 with the teen set.

The main themes here were wild animal and tribal prints mixed in the shades of a Keywest sunset; fuchsia, lavender, orange and teal. As far as silhouette, there were loads of one pieces with enough cutouts to give you less coverage than a bikini a one-piece.

NEXT UP: Images from Mara Hoffman’s Resort 2012 Collection, which was undisputedly the show of the evening and Rambo’s Beauty Pick of the Week.

Hint: As I started unpacking, he made a beeline for the Makeup Forever lipsticks and glosses. Tune in tomorrow to see what he loves most.

I’m Goin’ to Miami! [The Mercedes-Benz Miami Swim Shows] and Casa Casuarina

1 Jul

Text, Vivian Kelly

I think this is my 5th Mercedes Benz Miami Swim Show. Am I sick of it? No, for two reasons.

#1. I’ll be covering for The Fashion List and will have a chance to work with Ed Kavische, one of my favorite fashion photographers

#2: Casa Casuarina

Two years ago, I played tourist and bought my $50 ticket to take a tour of the inside of Gianni Versace’s former Miami Play palace. I’d had enough of simply gawking at the magnificent exterior and fantasizing about what lay inside.

Once in, it exceeded my expectations. I was transported in a time machine back to the early Nineties, when Gianni hosted huge soirees with names such as “Linda” Naomi” “Donatella” were shouted above the blasting music. There by the pool Gianni designed, I saw Gianni in his white linen shirt toasting Bruce Weber and laughing with a gaggle of gorgeous boy-men. A lucky few would get to model in the ad campaign with Stephanie Seymour and the other Supers.

In the end, one of the boys who passed through at one of the parties killed Gianni and now the mansion is hotel/luxury residence and no longer part of the Versace holdings.

No matter, Allegra Versace’s fantastical floral room is still a marvel and so is the bathroom that Madonna used on her frequent visits there.

It’s my birthday during Miami Swim and you guessed it. My gift to myself is another tour through Casa – the jewel in South Beach’s glittering crown.

What’s old is new again. Lady Gaga wore vintage Versace recently and it looks anything but dated. This may be her best look yet.

Don’t You Dare To Miss the Bus! “Discover Shiseido” – bus hopping nationwide beauty tour – Rolling in at a City Near YOU

26 May

Text, Vivian Kelly

The bus tour that’s the subject of this post is called “Discover Shiseido” . The multi-city bus tour is the luxury cosmetics’ company’s 1st ever such endeavor.

Still though, “A bus?” you say. “Really?”

Yes, really. THIS is not the yucky downtown bound M1, not by a longshot.

This bus is a goodie-laden vehicle that any beauty lover needs to clear her calendar for if she’s anywhere near one of the key cities the Shiseido mobile  will be hitting.

Just what ARE “major cities?” you may ask.

On the list this time: NYC, DC,  Miami, Houston, LA, San Fran, Seattle, Chicago, Boston.

Ever since I snuck to the TV room, way past my bedtime to watch the late-late-late show “Moon Over Miami”,  [no volume] I’ve been besotted over this glamorous beach City. Many Mercedes-Benz Miami Fashion Weeks later, the luster is still there. This time, the glamour comes courtesy of the Shiseido bus stopping by.

Here’s what’s in store if you can get there, and it’s all FREE.

  • Complimentary Japanese facial massage services
  • Gift certificates for a complete facial treatment at participating Macy’s locations
  • Samples of Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum.  As part of Shiseido’s worldwide best-selling skincare line, this serum regenerates aging cells to help reveal timeless skin in just one day. When the sample arrived, I tried it and I swear, my dry face felt less craggy the next morning. You really do see change in a day. That’s due to the potion’s hylaluronic acid doing its magic.  According to Company studies, an astonishing 97% of women see a reduction of deep wrinkles after using it for 3 weeks. Hopefully, I’ll be one of those lucky ladies.
  • Shiseido is giving away 100,000 samples through-out the course of the bus promo, so there’s more than enough to go around to try it for yourself and to give to some of your BFF’s.
  • Early bird special – the first person to check in at the trailer each day will receive a courtesy full-size bottle of the serum, valued at $80.

If you can’t make the bus, you still have another chance to be a winner by visiting Shiseido USA’s official Facebook page to enter to win a full collection of Shiseido Bio-Performance products (approximate retail value $1,000).

Again, that address is: www.facebook.com/shiseido

MORE FUN WITH SHISEIDO, via your laptop

The 3 brand ambassadors are documenting their experience including Aminat Ayinde, the runner up in ANTM –Aminat is posting daily on her Facebook page and on Shiseido’s Facebook page.

All things though must come to an end. This Shiseido initiative ends in mid-June.

* I’ll be reporting on the results of using Shiseido’s Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum at the end of June, here!

Below, a little bit of Shiseido history. After reading this, you’ll agree that Shiseido is one of those rare “venerable brands”.

Shiseido History Lesson

Shiseido stepped into the world of cosmetics in 1897 with the introduction of Eudermine. As its formula was based on the research of Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai of Tokyo Imperial University, who had studied at Berlin University, Shiseido aimed to use scientific methods to develop high-quality cosmetic products just as it had done with pharmaceuticals.

Although other cosmetics on the market at the time used Japanese names, Eudermine was made from the Greek eu, meaning good, and derma, meaning skin. It came in a beautiful glass bottle, and it was affectionately nicknamed “Shiseido’s Red Water” because of the lotion’s vivid color reminiscent of red wine.
Although Eudermine’s formula has been improved with scientific advances and its package redesigned numerous times, it is a long-selling product that is still a favorite among many people since its introduction over one-hundred years ago.
In 1997—the product’s 100th anniversary—Eudermine Global, a symbol of the aesthetic beauty that Shiseido has continuously developed, was introduced simultaneously both in Japan and overseas for the first time in collaboration with the French image maker Serge Lutens.
The lotion’s formula has evolved to “maintain moisture and prevent dry skin” and “regulate your skin’s regeneration.”
