Sebago’s Artisan Collection – Tradition Meets Innovative Style

26 Sep

You say “Tomatoe” I say “Tomahto”. The same goes with the shoe brand name, SEBAGO. No matter which way you elect to pronounce it, Sebago is a great brand. Sometime during NYFW, I fell into a huge clothing rut – I no longer knew what I wanted to wear, and despite a stuffed walk-in closet at home, nothing looked right. As I sat in Robert Verdi’s Luxe Laboratory, looking at the Sebago display, the answer came to me- preppy dressing.

By this, I mean how we used to dress in the late Seventies in Middle School and at Greenwich High. There was a uniform and it transitioned me into my freshman year at Duke. The early Eighties were a throwback period to conservatism. Ronald Reagan had just been elected President, and it was good to look WASP, ie: subtly rich. At this same time, Lisa Birnbach’s Preppy Handbook came out and served as the how-to get the look of affluence.

Key to the look is the boat shoe and the penny loafer. Anyone in Middle School who didn’t have Dock or Top Siders was a social outcast. One had a rounded toe, the other a square toe, and either was acceptable, as long as they were by Sperry. Only those most tuned into fashion back then knew that the ORIGINAL boat shoe was actually manufactured by SEBAGO, in 1946.  Friend, R. Scott French, fashion designer and co-owner of The Fashion List, was one of the few who KNEW. Little good this did him as his less enlightened Baltimore classmates kept insisting that his Sebago docks were “wrong” and their Sperrys were “right”.

Once at Duke, I swapped my topsiders for penny loafers in cordovan and wore them with jeans and some of my Mother’s tweed blazers and a prize Diana Vreeland red tweed blazer [with suede elbow patches]through fall and early winter.

Years later, I remembered my beloved topsiders and loafers while flipping through the September 2011 People’s Special Fashion Issue, with the blaring headline, “Kate’s Style Secrets!”. On p. 51 lay the answer to my “Whatever Do I Wear?” crisis. There, at the top of the page, were a pair of Sebago “Bala” mocassins, with an oily wax finish that looked great with Kate’s J Brand jeans and a simple button down shirt.

Years later, at the Luxe Lab, I learned from Tracee Yang, Harrison & Shriftman’s PR Rep, that today’s Sebagos are all hand made in the Dominican Republic.  They’ve kept the original designs we love but they’ve added some great fashion twists, by collaborating with artists such as Stash, an innovator in urban design who exhibited alongside the late Keith Haring, when he was 17 years old. Since then, he’s added a commercial aspect to his work, by collaborating with Nike and A Bathing Ape. We loved his short moc/boot that laces up and has a bit of spatter treatment to toughen up this beloved preppy staple.

Another noteworthy collaboration is with the Filson, a “better outdoor clothing company” that was established in 1897 in Seattle, by C.C. Filson, a former railroad conductor. His fledgling outdoor clothing store took off thanks to the Great Klondike Gold Rush [1897-9].

Sebago has mixed Filson’s oil tint cloths with Sebago leathers, most notably in a ruggedly handsome bag that’s also very practical. The bags are available exclusively in Bloomingdales’ selected NYC, Santa Monica, LA, and 59th Street.

Sure to be an editorial success are the women’s collection with Kimmie Smith, who’s known for her “nuvo glam style”. She’s already done a small collection for fall that’s being well received, but lookout for the spring collection, which will be available online in February and March. You’ll have to wait until then to pickup her irresistible colorful docksides.

For now, if you’re a guy, or shopping for one, you’re in luck. There’s a nice assortment of styles at the Sebago popup store at Saks 5th Ave. on the 7th floor. The salesmen there couldn’t be nicer. Seeing I was near tears after slogging through the rain to discover Saks isn’t yet carrying the Plaza and Bala Sebagos I wanted, they directed me to East 34th Street. It was there, thanks to them, that I finally scored, at Orva Shoes, just like they said, at 34 West 34th Street.

Now, I just have to wait until late October, for my pair of “Balas” to come in. I’ve just put in my order for the first tall boot I’ve bought in years – the Saranac, which has a stylish tweed panel offsetting the rich light brown leather and a practical lug sole.

Today, I verbalized what’s been running through my mind for a while now. I was at the Duckies’ downtown studio, gabbing before lunch with Daniel as Steven continued to sketch and color-in designs for the spring 2012 collection? The Duckies [and their shows] are all about the unexpected and that’s FUN. Turning to Daniel, I got up the nerve to just say it. “ It’s bratty, but I don’t want to write about things unless they’re fun.” To my relief, Daniel smiled and replied, “look at we do”.
Bingo. That sense of fun and play comes-through in their designs and in every show of theirs I can remember.
This brings me to events. My literary agent, Laura Wood of Fine Print Lit mused over cocktails at the Algonquin, “ You could go to an event every day in NYC if you work in the fashion business and live here, and drink and eat for free, at least five days a week.”

We laughed, because after a point, an event is no longer an “event” if they’re in such high supply. “Shouldn’t there be a vetting system?” as Steven posited for shows [and events] for that matter?
Driving home, I remembered my friend Jono Waks’ event – one of those I missed because I was out of town. It was silly but it sounded like silly fun, something I’d want to go see unlike yet another store opening. The “this” was a kooky eco-socialite-fashion -kitsch event that I kind of wished I’d managed to get over to in person.

Like the good publicist he is, Jono laid it all out in journalistic format: Who, What, When, Where, Why format. LOVE. If only all publicists would do this.
Here’s the scoop of a silly event that made me giggle and put me in the “Holiday spirit”.
Event Title: GREEN (ENERGY) IS THE COLOUR OF THE SEASON!

WHEN: Thursday, December 9, 2010

WHERE: The Duracell Mobile Smart Power Lab will pop-up @ Gansevoort Plaza, Meatpacking District, NYC.

WHO:

The Meat Packing District & Duracell bring the fashion community together to promote re-chargeable energy as a fashionable alternative.

DONATING THEIR ENERGY:

Carson Kressley, (Fashionista)
Robert Verdi, (Fashionista)
Tinsley Mortimer, (Fashionista)
Charlotte Ronson (Designer)
Joey Wolffer (Stylist/ The StyleLiner),
Jussara Lee (Designer)
Mazdack Rassi (Milk Studios),
Jean Pigozzi (Owner, LimoLand store),
Eric Goldstein (Owner, The Jean Shop)
Charles Nolan (Designer)

WHAT:

Duracell is using people power to illuminate the 2011 numerals in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. New Yorkers and tourists alike have the chance to literally help power the 2011 numerals by visiting one of two Duracell Smart Power Lab locations, hopping aboard a Power Rover and pedaling. With each push of the pedal, human energy is captured, converted into usable power, and then routed and stored at Duracell Battery Centers. The journey ends at One Times Square. The stored power will light up the 2011 numerals as the New Year’s Eve Ball drops and the clock strikes midnight.

The “WHAT” is an update to a question I always idly wondered about while watching the ball drop, year after year. ‘Just how much electricity did it take to get that disco ball fired up and going?’
After a little research, I happened on a write-up in www.thedailygreen.com.
As of January 1, 2008, in honor of its 100th birthday, the ball got with the times and became more energy efficient. The newer better ball was lit with close to 10,000 LED bulbs (light-emitting diode) the most energy efficient bulb on the market. According to The Los Angeles Times, “The ball used only as much energy as about 10 toasters.” Enough with the past. That was good, but this is better as in it’s even greener.

HOW [it works]:

The Duracell Power Rovers utilize rotary generator technology. As consumers pedal, energy is captured inside the power rover. The amount of energy captured is determined by the power and speed of the cycling.

Duracell’s capture and storage system saves the energy generated while pedaling and converts it to stored power as it travels from the Duracell Smart Power Lab to the Duracell Battery Centers.

The stored power will light up the 2011 numerals as the New Year’s Eve Ball drops and the clock strikes 12.

WHY [it matters] DURACELL is part of the Procter & Gamble Company [NYSE:PG], and it’s heartening to see that a big gun like this is getting behind the Green movement.

While I won’t be in T.S. this year, I’ll definitely be watching, on the huge flat screen TV at my gal pal, Pamme’s house, wearing a vintage Scaazi-ish creation I’m dashing over to scoop up at McGeorgie’s, in Newtown, CT this weekend – if it’s still there.

>Robert Verdi’s Celebrity 2010 Gift Guide

TEXT, VIVIAN KELLY

Okay, I was happy with my 1st Annual FE Gift Guide, but I got my vicarious celebrity fix in when I checked-out Robert Verdi’s 2010 Gift Guide. Robert is a television personality, celebrity stylist, and general go-to guy of good taste. He’s also one of my most fabulous fashion acquaintances, whom I first met years ago at Mercedes Benz Miami Fashion Week Swim. At that time, he was the spokesperson for Sunglass Hut. Watching Robert working alternating pairs of Pradas, Guccis and Dolce frames gave me a whole new view on how a simple pair of sunnies could change your entire look. After that, I don’t have any trouble understanding why women will happily drop upwards of $350 for a pair of Chanel or Prada frames.

Robert’s one of the celebrity stylists who actually deserves the title. The names in his A-list orbit who he shares with us in his private Holiday gifting list video include: The Jolie-Pitts, Tina Fey, Robert Pattinson, Fergie, Beyonce, and more of that ilk. When you’re dealing with that crowd, you’d BETTER have some pretty great ideas. These A-listers have EVERYTHING, but Robert’s come-up with the just-right gets for each and every one of them.
Small surprise there. Robert’s CV includes co-creating and hosting Full Frontal Fashion,co-hosting Surprise by Design, with co-host, Rebecca Cole, where they redesigned a room/exterior space at someone’s home on a $2,500 budget, in only one day. [The show became the Discovery Channel’s highest rated daytime show.] Add to that, his gigs hosting Fashion Police, and styling Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria Parker, as well as designing two of her Los Angeles, California homes.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg and if this has served to whet your appetite, visit http://www.luxelaboratory.com.

In the meantime, don’t waste any more time and check-out Robert’s entertaining video and find-out all about who’s getting what. Robert’s a great showman and in this video he bears a bit of a resemblance to Mike Meyers, one of my favorite comedians.

A few teasers: Koolaburra “Victoria boots”

for Fergie [love!], a cool Timex for Robert Pattinson [a great watch does NOT have to be expensive-o], and my personal favorite, a bottle of Perrier-Jouet champagne for William and “Kate the Commoner”. It’s a great bottle of bubbly with the added bonus of beautiful white flowers [painted on the bottle] that will never die on you.
Cheers!

Yesterday, I got lucky. A few days ago, I met the Red Door’s Publicist, Michelle Sabari-Wrubel, at Robert Verdi’s LUXE LOUNGE. As they say, “one thing led to another”. The “other” I this instance was that she arranged for a phone interview with ALISHA BOTERO, the Red Door Spas National Training Director, Nail Services. Talking with Alicia yesterday, pre-show was like having my very own woman on the inside. Alicia was doing nails, but she makes an excellent reporter too. She of course, told me about the nails, but in addition, provided descriptions about the hair Fredric Fekkai stylist, Renato Campora did that was so accurate, that when the images hit my computer hours later, I already had a very good idea of what I’d see.

“Nails, Alisha explained, should NOT compete with the clothing, Marchesa clothes are the stars. These are soft and glamorous Oscar looks that need nails that should compliment the gowns, not compete with them.”

Alisha used a sheer creamy baby pink polish that at this point is unnamed by Le Metier de Beaute. After looking over the pictures, I remembered reading that the late Gloria Guinness –one of the most elegant of all fashion icons – did not polish her nails, preferring this same clean and soft glamour. In today’s HD world, unpolished nails are just not an option for the Red Carpet, so Alisha’s take is the closest thing, and unlike an unpolished nail, looks finished.
She continued with a description of the hair, which was “braided and twisted on top of the head”, followed by the makeup –“which had a highlight around the face that gave it a glowing look, and a heavy white liner on the lid”. The white liner’s a great trick Bobbi Brown shared with me years ago, that saves you on days you’re super-tired. The white pops open the eye, giving an instant lift.

If you want to attempt the hair at home, you’ll need to work Fekkai Essential Shea Tame & Style Pot de Crème through your hair. Next, as Renato did, flip your head over and braid the hair out so that it will fall perfectly on top of the head, and secure it into a bun at the crown.
Finish-up by smoothing your hair with Fekkai Essential Shea Ultra-Rich Mask and Fekkai Silky Straight Smooth Finish. THAT, you can accomplish at home.

If it’s a special event, and you’re having a stylist do your hair, do as Renato did and place a gorgeous embellished accessory to the finished look.
Bellisima!

>ROBERT VERDI’S SUITE – The Future of Fashion: Custom Vans, Phyto Paris Haircare, Absolute Acai & Vitamin Zero Martinis= What’s good in life!

27 Apr

>

One of our favorite parts of New York Fashion Week is visiting Robert Verdi’s Luxe Laboratory, deep in the bowels of the Garment District. There’s a plethora of products to try and to review every season. This time at the Future of Fashion event, the list included Vitamin Water Zero, Acai Absolut Vodka, Phyto Hair Care, and best of all, custom made VANS.

Before my visit, I didn’t know a lot about Vans other than 1. they were a competitor of Keds from Cali, and 2. That most of the privileged kids at our CT high school wear them. As my soccer coach husband lives in sneakers, I decided to treat him to the custom made pair LL was offering guests to create for their own use.

Robert’s fabulous Assistant [we should say, “right hand”] got us started on the VANS Custom program, which is available for men and women. We went with the option of creating a flashy version of classic Vans, selecting the “old skool” model, complete with the waffle sole that still does “epitomize the West Coast surf and skate scenes”. The process was surprisingly easy and half way through, Robert himself came over and helped us put together a very colorful pair of shoes. This was a thrill because Robert really has an eye for color, which he uses to his clients’ advantage in fashion, and home décor.
“Great, he exclaimed, he [my husband] likes color!” He added some touches such as Kelly green piping around the tongue of the shoe and purple piping at the top of the rubber sole that matched the purple suede toecap.

All that remained after hitting the SEND button was to wait for them to arrive. Three weeks later, they hit our driveway and behold – the brightest suede shoes we’d ever seen. They were as the site promised “off the wall”!

Short on time, I only briefly stopped into the beauty room but long enough to chat with a Phyto Paris Rep who send us a bottle of PHYTO “Complement Alimentaire cheveux et ongles” [translation: dietary supplement for hair and nails]. As promised, half-way through the two-month treatment time, my hair was visibly shinier and grew faster than it had in the past year. Unlike other supplements we at TheFE have tried, these have a pleasant chocolate aroma and no bitter after-taste. Since they’re working so well, I’m going to continue on and complete the recommended 4-month treatment time. The celebrity hair stylist on hand raved about Phyto’s FIBER PASTE, which he said would be especially useful in taming my stubborn cowlicks.

On the way out of the suite, Ashely handed me a chic little LL Bean tote with a bottle of Absolut Acai and few bottles of ZERO VITAMIN water. Being a martini a night girl, I set-about trying out the various Zeros and vodka to find the perfect mix. So far, our favorite back home is the pomegranate “go-go” shaken [not stirred] with Absolute Acai in a 1-1 ratio. Add to that that no matter which Vitamin Water you use, your cocktail’s delivering some healthy benefits. Cheers!
